Hungry Jack Lodge Fire

No official news yet on what caused the Hungry Jack Lodge fire. The original lodge was built on Hungry Jack in the 1920's, burned once in the 1930's and the second time in the 1970's. The current lodge that just burned was built in the 1970's. It is certainly a loss to the Gunflint Trail and we wish Forrest Parson's the best in this difficult time. The resort remains open and temporary office set up in one of their cabins. Guests are still welcome .

Fire at Hungry Jack Lodge

From the local news updates:

After receiving an emergency 911 call from Hungry Jack Lodge at 1:22 PM on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, Cook County Law Enforcement issued a page to the Gunflint Trail Fire Department and Gunflint Trail Ambulance. The Gunflint Fire Department responded and found that the fire was in the Lodge’s main building. Firefighters battled both the fire and the cold weather, but by 5:25 PM the historic main building, which housed the office, restaurant, and bar, was reported to be a total loss.

Enjoying the last of winter?

I am not sure we have seen the end of winter yet as I heard the Chicago area and southern Wisconsin had yet another snow storm over the past few days. But it is spring so you never know. Here is a group that passed through to enjoy the warmer days on snowmobiles.

Lake Superior

I went to Duluth for a few days last week to get some shopping done and just relax. The drive to Duluth from here on a sunny day is so nice because most of the drive is along Lake Superior. I took this picture of the ice from the 'big lake' pushing up against the shore.

Is it spring yet?

When the time changes, I am ready to declare spring is here. But winter is still with us although milder than before. We had a dusting of snow last night and the ski trails are still groomed and waiting. Temperatures have been hovering around freezing.
Ice fishing is over for the year and ice houses are off the lake now. Folks are making summer vacation plans for canoe trips and cabins.

The first spring event on the Gunflint Trail is the Green Up on May 2 - 4. This is an excellent family event and the perfect time to get out to the woods and welcome spring in a special way. You can get more details on http://www.gunflintgreenup.com/. We have 75,000 red and white pines to plant!

Remember, if you can come to register on the Green Up website so we have the right amount of equipment. If you cannot come but would like to make a donation to the effort, you can also do that on the web site http://www.gunflintgreenup.com/.

BWCA Permit Quota Changes

At the resort, our thoughts are turning to canoe deliveries, outfitting food orders, spring repairs, canoe trips and cabins. We are still bundled in gloves and coats but the sun is warm on our face and you can take deep breaths and smell spring just around the corner.......when I wrote this the other day, it was 33 degrees outside. Last night it got to 15 below and the wind is biting. Oh well, February is the month for drastic temperature changes.
