The wind is blowing

It got to at least 22 below last night and the wind was blowing us a wind chill of at least 50 below. It sounded a bit like thunder at times in the lodge. We are looking forward to another warm up this weekend where it will be 20 above!

The John Beargrease mushers pulled into Trail Center late Monday afternoon and the rain started and the temperatures dropped. After the weather change, some 14 teams had to drop out of the race due to the stress on the dogs that the icy weather caused. The winner of the race is Jason Barron of Lincoln, Montana.

Clearwater Lodge Photo Gallery

Much to my dismay, when I went to load some new photos in the photo gallery on our website, most all my older photos were not there! It seems like between the last time I updated the gallery and now there was some corruption and the photos were gone. So, I deleted everything that was there and started loading all the new photos. I have about 100 loaded so far and it will take some work each day for the next week to finish up.

I created 5 categories.....Cabins, Wildlife, Fish Stories, Great Guest Photo's, and Everything fun (general).

If you have some time, take a look. You can view as thumbnail, slideshow or individually. Only if you view individually will you be able to read the description of the picture.

We have such a great collections of pictures from friends that is is really more fun than work to do this project.

My Bird Feeder

Yes, I am finally getting some birds to my bird feeder. It took about 2 weeks for them to find it and I kept tossing seed down on the ground trying to temp them.
From what I can tell from my bird book, I am getting two types of birds visiting all the time; black capped chickadees and red breasted nuthatches. That is OK with me they keep the feeder very busy and there are some traffic jams.
I enjoy watching them from the lodge kitchen window. This photo is of a chickadee.

15.5 inches of snow

We had 15.5 inches of snow over the past weekend and it is beautiful. We had a large party visiting in cabin 7 and lodge this past weekend and the men went ice fishing and the ladies tried out their skis. After a mild weekend, the temperature has dropped to the teens with below zero at night. Still not our normal chilly January weather but I think that is still coming.

Per my neighbors, Clearwater Lake has about 18 inches of ice.

Today the BWCA permit lottery closes for applications at 5:00 PM CT. During the next 5 days the permits from the lottery will be assigned, unsuccessful applicants will be notified and successful aplicants will get an email or a letter in the mail. Starting 1/20 we can begin reserving permits on the remaining quota per entry point and date.

Ice Fishing On Clearwater Lake

We have had over a foot of snow this weekend and it is still snowing out now. It was great ice fishing open as the temperatures continued to be mild. This picture, not the best, is of the folks ice fishing yesterday on Clearwater Lake. It is blurred by the amount the snow falling at the time.

Ice Fishing Open and Fresh Snow

This weekend is ice fishing open for Clearwater Lake which is partially in the BWCA. Guests got up early and headed out to the lake. The temperatures are in the 20's today (abover zero!) so it is the perfect day to be out on the ice.

Along with ice fishing open, it has snowed the last 24 hours adding a nice coating to all the trees and trails.

Dog Sled

Yesterday I heard some dogs sounding really excited and went outside to see several dog sleds running by the lodge and down to the waterfront. Off they went on the lake.
It has been a little while since I wrote on the blog with the holidays and guests and I lost track of it.
We have had a few days of warmer weather as has the rest of the midwest. Our tempertures got up to the mid-30's which is so unusual for this part of MN in January. More snow is in the forecast for this weekend and colder temperatures.
