Ice Out on Clearwater Lake

The ice is out on Clearwater Lake. I was gone this past week visiting friends and family in Indiana and when I returned almost all the snow was gone and the ice was off the lakes.

I got to enjoy wonderful spring weather and spring flowers in IN. While there, my parents crab apple trees flowered and the lawn was mowed.

With the ice out, I am now looking forward to seeing spring again in MN.

We open with fishing opener the weekend of May 11th.

Choosing a Canoe Route

If you haven't been to the BWCA before a canoe trip, I think one of the hardest things for a potential visitor to decide is what canoe route to take. Every route has it advantages is in a remarkable wilderness area but we want to help you find a route that fits your skill level and objectives. We help our guests decide on a canoe route by asking the following questions.....

1) How experienced are you in both canoeing and camping?
2) What is the goal of your trip? Is it fishing, photography, relaxing, self-challenge, waterfalls, etc..?
3) How much do you want to paddle each day? Under 5 miles, 10 miles?
4) Do you want to change camp sites every night?
5) Are you bringing childen?
6) Would you like to do some hiking also?

Based upon these questions we can help identify a route that will please the entire group and get your permits for that route.

Spring canoe delivery in the snow

Nothing gets me more ready for the canoe season then the arrival of our new canoes from We-No-Nah. Today we unloaded our new arrivals in the snow. By the time we were done, it had snowed an inch of the predicted 4 to 8 inches we are supposed to have.

Winter Snow Storm

I took this picture along the Gunflint Trail yesterday because I really like the rock formations and it showed how little snow we have left. Outside of the deep woods almost all the snow is gone. The lake still has a good 18 inches on it so I don't expect to see open water any time soon.

To my surprise, I got up this morning and it is snowing out. Looking at the weather forecast we are under a winter storm warning starting tonight and tomorrow and we could get a few inches of the white stuff.

Our spring canoe order arrives tomorrow so I will be carrying in canoes in snow again this year.
