Shopping Trip

Peggy and Lynn just returned from two days shopping in Duluth. We are 120 miles from the large stores such as Sam's Club and Walmart so about once every six weeks during the summer we have to drive to Duluth to get some of the supplies we need for the season. It was a good trip because between all the shopping we got to see a movie. The closest movies theaters to us are in Duluth or Thunder Bay, Canada. We saw Click with Adam Sandler and gave it a B-. Sarah and Queenie got to spend the day at the groomers while we shopped.

Moose in the Mist

It continues to be a good fishing season in this area. We have folks coming back from canoe trips with reports of good Walleye, Northern and Smallmouth fishing.

BRT Moose

Earlier in June the Coleman family spent a week in Cabin 4. While hiking the Border Route Trail, they spotted a moose between Rove and Daniels Lakes. They were able to get some nice pictures that they shared with us. The photo was taken by Jill Coleman Wasek. Moose like to be in swampy waters to keep bugs away and to keep cool.

Exciting Adventure Vacations

On the TV show Good Morning America this morning (June 22nd), the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was listed as number 6 of the top 10 'Exciting Adventure Vacations'. We were quite excited about this. We know it is a wonderful place to visit but it was fun to see it recognized on TV and by The National Geographic Association.

Bug Bands

If you are going to come to Minnesota in early June, you have to have a way to effectively protect yourself from the bugs. We found a new item we really liked this year, it is called a Bug Band. It is a wrist band that lasts up to 120 hours and can get wet and still work just fine. It comes in a resealable container so when you are not wearing it, you seal up the bug band so it will last longer. It is all natural and repels all our wonderful Minnesota buggy friends. At night, you can hang it in your tent or on your bed post to have all night protection.

Summer Staff 2006

Every summer we hire 5 to 6 college kids to live and work here at the lodge. This summer we have Stephanie and Travis returning from last year and new to us is Andi, Erik and Ed. Although it is hard work, the great thing about working at a BWCA resort for the summer is the staff can take short BWCA trips almost every week if they want. There is plenty of time to go fishing and exploring when not working. Our group this year seems to enjoy canoe trips and fishing.

First Entry! Welcome to the new site!

This is our first official blog entry!! Our hope is to give regular updates on fishing, weather, camping, cabins and anything else interesting that happens in the Northwoods and at the Lodge. It would help quite a bit if you would add some comments of your own to the blog. Then we would know what you might be interested in hearing about.

For June 12th, the weather has been perfect the past few days. We had unusually hot weather at the end of May breaking records at 88 degrees. However we are back to the more normal weather of bright sunny days at 70 degrees and cool nights in the 50's. Added by Lynn.

Moose Sightings

June 13th - It is another beautiful day. We started out with a little rain this morning but it cleared up and we have temperatures in the high 60's. Several of our guests really wanted to see moose on their visit here, so they decided to check the situation out at dawn. Dawn is around 4:30 AM at this time of the year so they decided to take a drive around 4:15 AM. They saw one moose on the Clearwater Road and 4 moose on the Gunflint Trail.
